Ása-Þórr, wielder of Mjölnir’s might,

Champion of courage, defender of right.

Grant us the strength to stand and fight,

To face our own jötunn and conquer the night.

Your hammer strikes with purpose clear,

A justice all foes must fear.

With steadfast will, you lead the way,

Through storm or struggle, we will not sway.

Protector of Midgard, noble and true,

Hail the Striker, we honor you.

Ása-Þórr is currently, and arguably has been for a thousand years, the most well-known of the Æsir to the common man. In fact, if one were to explain to a random person off of the street what Ásatrú is, that random person would later describe the faith to someone else as something akin to “worshiping Þórr.”

Why is that?

We all know that his father, mighty Lord Óðinn, is the king of the Æsir; and yet, the Thunderer is who the common man knows, even when he doesn’t know the Æsir in the slightest. Some might attribute this to the Marvel movies, and some might attribute it to the idea that Lord Þórr serves as some sort of archetype of the “perfect Germanic man.”

However, neither of these are the case!

Þórr is known to the common man because he has ALWAYS been a champion of ALL classes of our people. He is called upon for all manner of blessing, and called upon by all manner of Rig’s children.

The farmer calls upon him for rain, the wanderer calls upon him for safe travel, the warrior calls upon him for courage, and Aryan young men all used to (and will again!) call upon him for strength!

Beyond this, 9 out of 10 Ásatrúar wear a pendant modeled after Lord Þórr’s hammer, the mighty Mjólnir, as a talisman or protection. Our ancestors also used it to make clear their loyalty to the Æsir during the Christian scourge, just as we do today, but the primary reason that we wear Þórr’s weapon specifically is because we are showing the forces of chaos that we are under his protection!

The title of this article is taken from a chant taught to me by my esteemed colleague, Spekingr Svan Herul. It was used by the Goðar of Þórshof District, circa 2022, to call upon Lord Þórr and bless sacred items in his presence, using four of his names from across time. Since that time, I have often used it during Blót to the Thunderer, encouraging our Folk to imagine and FEEL the thunderous might of Þórr before putting their energy and intent into the gifts being offered to him.

I strongly encourage everyone to make time to perform your own Blót to Ása-Þórr! Give him good gifts, speak from your heart, and thank him for all he continues to give us!

Hail Þórr!
