Hlín, Protector of the Folk

Hlín: she is established as keeper over those men whom Frigg desires to preserve from any danger; thence comes the saying, that he who escapes 'leans.'
— Gylfaginning 35
Hlín is the “Protector”. Hlín is good for women to pray to when loved ones
are far away and there is need to safeguard them. Hlín is the patroness
of protection, especially protections
of children.
— Ásatrú Trúlögmál
In the Gylfaginning, she is listed as one of the Frigg's handmaidens. She is tasked with protecting those Frigg wants to keep free from harm. Hlín is considered a protector of the Folk. Something that's been on my mind a lot lately. I always imagine her as standing strong before the Folk with shield held firmly acting as protection from whatever is before them. Or at times when your mind has wandered to those areas of regret and sadness, she is that soft, warm embrace you feel that shakes you into focus and forward movement.
Hlín's power is in her subtle guardianship. She brings solace to mortals and gods alike. Easing fear as fate draws near. Offering comfort. For our ancestors, guardianship was a sacred and literal duty. It was more than a legal role. Guardian figures were seen as active protectors, guides, and moral exemplars, shaping how people understood their place in the cosmos and their duty to uphold virtue. Guardianship was a spiritual anchor — a belief system that reinforced the idea that life’s journey was not traveled alone. Their presence encouraged virtue, resilience, and a deeper connection to the sacred.
I often seek out Hlín when I'm praying for the Folk. Quieting my mind. Finding my heartbeat, the same heartbeat that beats through my line of Ancestors back to the beginning. I visualize a wall around myself, my family, and the Folk of the Innangarðr. I ask to see and understand.
Hail Hlín!
May those that seek it find safety under her shield.
May she ease their pain and rekindle hope in their hearts.
Moving forward for a stronger future for all our Folk!
Hail Hlín!
Stillness, heartbeat, and breathwork work for me. I encourage you all to make this your own by using the method that works best for you. Build a relationship with Hlín. Reach out to her not just for yourself but for your Folk. Without fear, without anxiety. Keep moving forward with right action, always growing in knowledge.
Hail Hlín!
Hail the Æsir!
Hail the Folk!
Hail the AFA!
