Járnskegge
Járnskegge, whose name means roughly “Iron-Beard”, was a Norwegian Ásatrúar and landowner in Þróndheim during the last years of the 10th century. This means he was able to own weapons, serve in a Jarl’s army, and even raise his own small warband when necessary.
We do not know a great deal of his personal history, but we do know that he was a veteran of the near-mythical Battle of Hjörungavágr against the Jomsvikings, as well as a staunch loyalist to the Æsir. This brings us to the infamous King Olaf Tryggvason, villain of many of our stories.
King Olaf, on his rampage through Norway, brought an army to Þróndheim and called all of the people to a Þing, which is a general assembly. He began speaking to them about abandoning the Æsir and accepting Christ. The Folk of Þróndheim, led by Járnskegge, refused and convinced Olaf to leave.
Following this, Olaf goes to the nearby land of Hlad. He celebrates a festival with the people there one night, and then threatens them with death if they do not convert the following morning. Some refused, so Olaf had many of the men killed and their families taken hostage. This forced the remaining people of Hlad to convert.
Olaf then returns to Þróndheim, only to be greeted by Járnskegge and an army of Ásatrúar prepared to fight for their Gods. Olaf delivered a speech telling the people to forsake the Æsir and accept the god of Abraham. Járnskegge refuses immediately, with the crowd shouting their approval. King Olaf then says he will go with them into their local Hof to see their practices. Olaf and a few of his retainers entered the Hof with some of the local men, while Járnskegge and some of his people waited outside.
While inside the Hof, Olaf sees a statue to Lord Þórr and immediately orders his men to ransack the temple and kill Járnskegge’s people that came in with them. Outside of the Hof, Járnskegge is surrounded and murdered by Olaf’s men, which coerces the remaining Folk of Þróndheim to give in and betray the Æsir.
Although he was killed by Christian treachery and deceit, Járnskegge was a champion of our faith in his day. When faced with certain demise or betraying his Gods, he willingly and immediately chose the former. Not only did he stand tall for the Æsir, but he inspired all of Þróndheim to do the same!
May we all learn to be as steadfast as mighty Járnskegge!
Hail Járnskegge, champion of Þróndheim!
Hail the Asatru Folk Assembly!
